This is my first blog post on The Writing Website! I’m so looking forward to writing to you.
I absolutely adore writing fiction (mostly fantasy). I’m not published yet, because I haven’t finished many books, but I’ve had quite a bit of experience in writing and know it can be really hard to stick with it, especially when you have another job, or are at school or university. My blog has some ideas to help you become the best writer you can be. I’ve also come up with some ideas for when you’ve got writer’s block (a feeling I am very familiar with). I’d also say, if you’re still at school, if there’s a creative writing club you can go to, definitely go! One of my best books started at my school’s creative writing club.
Most of these ideas are written for a book that has already been started, but they can be changed to be used for a book that you want to write but haven’t begun, or as short scene/story exercises, or to simply help with writing skills. I should also point out that this blog is about fiction books. That said, some tips may be able to be tweaked slightly to fit non-fiction books.
I’ve been writing since I was very young and I started my first proper book when I was about eight or nine years old. Almost ten years later I’m still really enjoying it. Although I’m not perfect at writing (and it’s reassuring that no one is), I do have some experience of what things work (or don’t work) for me and I’ve written some of them on this blog to inspire you to keep writing. I hope you find it helpful!
I’m not great with technology, and this is the first website I’ve made, so please be patient if I take a while to post more ideas! I also have to balance this blog with writing and school work, as well as other things, so sometimes I won’t be able to post regularly, but I’ll try to post at least once a month.
The aim of this blog is to help other writers find their strengths and improve their weaknesses. If ever you want help or ideas for a certain topic, genre, or any other part of writing, feel free to ask in the comments or in the Forum! I should remind you that I haven’t tried to get published yet, so I don’t know much about that, but someone else might be able to help if you have any questions about publishing. I have been dipping into the publishing world, trying to figure out what’s what, so I might be able to help guide you to useful websites about publishing.
The main idea sections I’m going to address (at least for now) are:
- Discovering How You Write! Which includes:
- Description, Action and Dialogue
- Readers’ attention
- Showing and Telling
- Getting To Know Your Characters! Which includes:
- Writer’s Block Cures! Which includes:
- Ideas to get your creativity flowing
- Ideas for short scenes/stories
- Writer’s Jargon Dictionary!
- Books and Websites for Help with Writing!
If these categories are ever added to, I’ll change the list here!
If you want me to cover any other topics, just ask! (As I said before, I might not be able to tell you much about some of them, but if you post the topic in the Forum, someone else might be able to help.) If you ever have any ideas you want posted, contact me! My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org; alternatively you can fill out a form on the Contact page.
Some people in my creative writing club gave me permission to put some of their work on my blog. They did some of the exercises during the club, then gave their work to me to post. If I have an example for an idea, I’ll post it too, so look out for those!
Thanks for reading! I hope to post something new soon!
Finally, for all posts, readers are reminded that people of all ages can read comments — please keep your language and writing family-friendly!
